Congo seeks China’s help to secure financial support from IMF

The China-Africa Cooperation Forum to be held in Beijing from 3 to 4 September will be another opportunity for the Republic of Congo to solicit China’s support in its attempt to secure financial support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

China is Congo’s largest creditor.

Thierry Moungala, Brazzaville’s information told Bloomberg that “Any clear support from China, politically and economically, will assure the IMF that the reforms” that the government agrees to in exchange for a rescue plan will be implemented”.

Congo, the continent’s fourth largest oil producer, owes at least $9.14 billion to various international creditors.

Congo’s former rebel leader Pastor Ntumi surrenders arms [The Morning Call]

Eight months after a ceasefire ended the hidden conflict between the Congolese government and the militia group called the Ninjas, former Congolese rebel leader Frédéric Bintsamou, popularly known as Pasteur Ntumi, has made his first public appearance.

Together with ex-combatants, Ntumi joined the weapons collection operation, part of the amnesty programme offered by the Congolese government in July.

Ntumi’s rebel group a previously dormant militia, the Ninja had fought the government forces in a 20 month conflict that left tens of thousands displaced and entire districts deserted.

Deal with issues that caused taking up of arms: Congo’s Ninja Leader says

A rebel leader in the Republic of Congo on Tuesday accepted the principle of laying down arms in his first public appearance since he agreed to a ceasefire last December.

Frederic Bintsamou, also known as Pastor Ntumi, is head of a powerful militia called the Ninjas which launched a revolt in April 2016 in the southern region of Pool, prompting more than 138,000 people to flee their homes.

On December 23, 2017, Bintsamou’s group signed a ceasefire deal with the government which was touted as laying the groundwork for peace. In it, Bintsamou committed to “facilitating the collection of weapons held by the ex-combattants” but did not follow up on this, saying he opposed [...]
